Used to work great, but I keep getting an error (often when switching from cellular to WiFi or vice-versa) that the app can't get permissions for a VPN, but launching it from a shortcut works fine despite the error still showing. I have to reset the app to get it to hide the message, which means I then have to set up my VPN connection again.

Update: This app hasn't worked properly for the last few weeks. It simply gives an error message and quits when first started. Totally useless now. ‐------ Works great for creating a VPN tunnel connection to my home router. Fortunately my WiFi router is setup to use OpenVPN. After making a connection, it's like my phone is locally connected to my home WiFi network even though I'm not home. Great for security or running apps that require a local connection.

Works exceptionally well. Very easy to import connection files. I've used this for several years now and had no major issues. My one and only gripe is the connect/disconnect switch is sometimes difficult to click. It responds to clicks (animation changes) but does not actually switch. Outside of that, excellent job.

This app works great!... except for the fact that it doesn't automatically connect. If you go to an area where the vpn for one reason or another doesnt work, the vpn will give up and not retry when you change networks. Due to the lack of this feature I have to rate it three stars because I have to manual connect daily. (another problem that i have experienced is that the vpn doesnt transfer networks easily, making you again have to manually reconnect the vpn.)

Was good for years, recently crashes or disconnects. I explicitly route all phone traffic through it and have it pause connections when the screen is locked. In the last month I intermittently notice it is no longer running and I have no idea how long my connection has not been routed through my network. My backups are over that network well so those stop while it is off. A few times on restart it has forgotten my connection settings and I have to re-import an ovpn file.

The new UI font used in the app is awful; bring back the previous font (Roboto), please. The color choices in app's theming and UI, negatively affects UX; the contrasts between colors for backgrounds and fonts have been chosen badly, especially in the light/default theme. Sometimes opening the app takes forever to load the profiles page, because of an unnecessary check at the app's startup, which requires an Internet connection. Also when selecting "Import File", the default tab should be "FILE", not "URL".

About this app

WHAT IS OPENVPN CONNECT?

The OpenVPN Connect app does NOT independently provide a VPN service. It is a client application that establishes and transports data over an encrypted secure tunnel via the internet, using the OpenVPN protocol, to a VPN server.

WHICH VPN SERVICES CAN BE USED WITH OPENVPN CONNECT?

OpenVPN Connect is the only VPN client created, developed, and maintained by OpenVPN Inc. Our customers use it with our business solutions, listed below, for secure remote access, enforcing zero trust network access (ZTNA), protecting access to SaaS apps, securing IoT communications, and in many other scenarios.

⇨ OpenVPN Cloud: This cloud-delivered service integrates virtual networking with essential secure access service edge (SASE) capabilities such as firewall-as-a-service (FWaaS), intrusion detection and prevention system (IDS/IPS), DNS-based content filtering, and zero-trust network access (ZTNA). Using OpenVPN Cloud, businesses can quickly deploy and manage a secure overlay network that connects all of their applications, private networks, workforce, and IoT/IIoT devices without owning and operating a multitude of complex, hard-to-scale security and data networking gear. OpenVPN Cloud can be accessed from more than 30 worldwide locations and uses patent-pending technologies to create a full-mesh network topology for improved performance and routing to private applications—hosted on multiple connected networks—simply by using the application name (for example, app.mycompany.com).

⇨ OpenVPN Access Server: This self-hosted VPN solution for remote access and site-to-site networking provides granular access control and supports SAML, RADIUS, LDAP, and PAM for user authentication. It can be deployed as a cluster to provide active/active redundancy and for operating at high scale.

OpenVPN Connect can also be used to connect to any server or service compatible with OpenVPN protocol or running the open source Community edition.

HOW TO USE OPENVPN CONNECT?

OpenVPN Connect receives configuration information for the VPN server using a “connection profile” file. It can be imported into the app using a file with a .ovpn file extension or a website URL. The file or website URL and user credentials are provided by the VPN service administrator.
