About this app

Cybermentor is an online mentoring program for girls in grades 6 to 12 across Alberta.

Each girl is matched with her own carefully-screened mentor and the two connect throughout the school year using their computers, phones or tablets.

By chatting with their mentor through a secure site and app, the girls learn about the wealth of careers and opportunities in science and engineering, discover new interests and gain confidence.

The mentors—inspiring women in diverse careers in science, technology, engineering and math—enjoy the experience of being a role model and motivating the next generation of scientists and engineers.

Mission
The mission of the Cybermentor program is to inspire girls in science and engineering. The program achieves this mission via two goals:

Broadening girls’ knowledge of career opportunities and benefits for women in science, technology, engineering and math-focused fields, through guided communication with her own online mentor.
Motivating girls to continue their science and math studies in school, by building a relationship with a positive female role model in science or engineering.

Carefully Matched
Each girl is carefully matched with her own mentor based on career interests, hobbies, and preferences. As well as bringing their own experiences to the online conversations, Cybermentor provides mentors with resources and training to facilitate discussions. Any girl in grade 6 to 12 across Alberta can participate—all they need to join the free Cybermentor program is parental consent and access to the Internet once a week during the school year.

Girls can join the program at any time, and are usually matched within 2 weeks. The program provides a safe, secure environment for communication, and our mentors are carefully screened. Every June, we wrap up the season with a celebration with the girls, their families and mentors.

Girls are welcome to be part of Cybermentor every year from grade 6 to 12. They will be assigned a new mentor based on their growing interests each year, to give them a full range of perspectives. And after graduation, girls become Cybermentor alumnae with access to the online community, discussion forums and other resources. Many alumnae go on to become mentors themselves, inspiring and empowering more girls and women to bring their unique talents to science and engineering.
