Was a very useful service but now they've gotten rid of it without providing any real alternative for people that don't have iPhones (for wifi calling). I can't use WiFi calling so am now stuck if I need to make 08 calls whilst I'm away from home. Did they consult anyone that doesn't have a fancy £800 phone?

So disappointed that you are stopping this service! It was so useful when travelling. So where is the reduction in my anytime call package as you have taken away part of the service??

Just read all the comments and must admit I had a slight issue setting it up but just logged online and adjusted settings. The app is great. My boy lives in Ireland and I have discount via my landline so it's great that I can be out and about and still call him without worrying about paying international mobile calls fees. The app has got loads better and is far more stable than it initially was.

Cannot end calls as screen goes grey. Have looked on forums for a solution and not even BT have replied on their own website. I have to go into app programme and tap force stop. Great idea but poor App. BT sort it out!!! Update: 30/09/16 Nothing has changed. If you use your phone to ring a company that has an automated service, the screen is blank so you cannot make a selection. What a load of pony. Great idea poor service.

Update originally rated 3 * but now has worked fine for a year. Tried to install on my tablet. Said it was already installed! Not here at all! It is on my phone but not my tablet! I can only assume some check with google apps says I have downloaded it, but that was elsewhere! Now can not use my tablet for smart talk! Sucks! I have searched through settings for installed apps. Def not there! Does work fine on phone so not giving too bad rating, just make it capable of being installed on more than one device.

I thought they couldn't make anything worse than BT WiFi but I was wrong. Do not expect to be able go use this app if you swap from the original handset you had - it will not work. There is no option to select 'I changed my device'. You MUST go via the website and delete your ID which takes 24hrs. Then you need to start over with activation process. This means being at home because they use your landline for authentication codes. So if you are on holiday you are stuffed. Well done BT.

About this app

Please note that we will be closing the BT SmartTalk service and removing this application in January 2019.

New users should not attempt to download the app or register for this service, as we are starting to withdraw support. Existing users are advised to investigate the alternatives described below, which should provide similar cost savings on mobile phone calls.

BT apologises for any inconvenience the removal of BT SmartTalk may cause.

Why we are withdrawing this service
• Roaming call charges in the EU no longer apply.
• BT Mobile and other providers now offer cost effective call plans with unlimited minutes.
• New technologies largely negate the need for SmartTalk.

What are the alternatives?
• Changes in the law from 15 June 2017 mean that you can use your monthly allowances of calls, data and texts while you’re in 28 locations in the EU at no extra charge.
• BT Mobile and other providers provide cost effective roaming plans and add-ons for countries outside of the EU.
• Other third party voice over mobile and Wi-Fi solutions are available. These services will work for the majority of customers calling someone with the correct app installed.
• We've also recently introduced seamless voice calling over Wi-Fi and 4G for BT Mobile customers. This is available on selected enabled BT Mobile handset plans, many new Android devices and iPhones, 5S and above.

What happens next?
• We will be removing the BT SmartTalk app from the app stores and preventing any new customers signing up to this service in January 2019.
• The service will cease in January 2019 and you will no longer be able to use the SmartTalk app on your mobile device to make calls.
• Any mobile network calls you subsequently make will be assigned to your normal mobile calling allowance and bill.

What you need to do
Other than being aware of the removal of this service and the potential impact to your mobile voice minutes allowance, you do not have to do anything. However, as it will no longer be working, we recommend you delete the SmartTalk app from your device, to avoid any confusion and to free up memory.
You may also wish to consider switching to a BT Mobile handset or SIM only plan and take advantage of our new packages with seamless Wi-Fi and 4G calling functionality.
