About this app

The Comfort Mate App is an application made available to the participants of the Comfort Mate Joint Industry Project (JIP). Such project is initiated by the Maritime Research Institute Netherlands.

The App allows the user to measure the Comfort Rating (CR) directly from his mobile phone. Such CR is determined from the accelerations that the human body feels onboard a ship which is moving, due to the waves.

The larger the CR value, the lower the discomfort onboard due to ship motions. The CR is usually calculated by MARIN software or measured during model testing phase at concept level. It is then used by the shipyards and naval architects to assess the future comfort onboard the future yacht in given wave conditions.

It is also often used to compare different roll stabilisation options for example. Bringing such comfort Rating directly onboard allows the end-user to be aware of the Comfort Rating level. Owners or passengers can even check the levels on different yachts if they wish! Even if the App is primarily designed to provide levels on a given yachts and her Captains and owner.

The project will provide important feedback on the perception and sensitivity of passengers onboard yachts. It will help the industry making better yachts by integrating their client’s feedback and Comfort profile.

It will also support research and science by performing measurements and feedbacks directly on site. By further developing the system within the project, additional capabilities such as multiple locations CR values onboard and the prediction of the comfort thanks to weather forecast will support the Captain in his decisions.

Participants of the JIP will decide themselves with who they would allow (or not) to share their own measurements within the JIP and will also decide together the new functionalities the project and its app will propose.

All stake holders in the yacht industry who aim at decreasing the possible dis-comfort related to ship motions will gain in participating in this Joint industry Project.
