من المعلوم أن الحافظ العراقي في نظمه هذا كان يحاول احتواء كتاب ابن الصلاح في علوم الحديث، فمن البدهي أن يكون شرح هذا النظم في موضوع الأصل؛ لذا فقد كانت مادة علوم الحديث أو مصطلح الحديث المادة الأصلية في الكتاب، غير أن الكتاب لا يخلو من مباحث في علوم متنوعة كاللغة والصرف والنحو والعروض والتاريخ والسير وغيرها، دلّت بمجموعها على تضلع الحافظ العراقي في علوم شتى وتنوع معارفه واختلاف مشاربه، كما أن الكتاب لم يكن اختصاراً مجرداً، أو تقنيناً رتيباً، بل امتاز بأن أتى الشارح فيه بغرر الفوائد، ونفائس العوائد، استدراكاً وتصحيحاً وتعقباً وإيضاحاً، وزيادات ضمتها دفتا هذا السفر العظيم أكملت في نهاية المطاف مشوار علم مصطلح الحديث، فالحافظ العراقي لم يأت بعده حافظ يدانيه أو يقاربه سوى الحافظ ابن حجر، الذي صنف أيضاً في علم مصطلح الحديث كتاباً، لعلنا لا نكذب أنفسنا إن قلنا أن الحافظ العراقي كان مادته الأولى فيه، وإن كانت لابن حجر روعة الترتيب والابتكار، ويمكن القول بأن الحافظ العراقي يعدُّ المؤسس الثاني والمُنَظِّر الأخير لعلم المصطلح، وإن استدركت عليه بعض الأشياء، فهي لا تخل بروح التجديد التي امتلكها الحافظ العراقي، في أثناء شرحه فالحكم هنا للأغلبية لا للكلية.
وقد احتوى هذا الكتاب على مفاتيح علم الحديث، ضمنها نبذاً من علومه على اختلاف موادها، فمن التواريخ إلى المتون ثمَّ ضبطها ثم المعرفة بالرجال ثمَّ بجرحهم وتعديلهم ثم إلى ألوان العلوم، يتقلب القارئ فيها بين رياض أزهارها، يقطف ورودها ويجني ثمارها بإدامة النظر في هذا العلم وتتبع شوارده، وقنص فوائده، وملاحظة مواضع كلام أهل الشأن فيه، واسم ألفية العراقي:( والتبصرة والتذكرة)، وشرحها بعد ذلك، واسم الشرح: (شرح التبصرة والتذكرة). والله الهادي والموفق للحق بإذنه..
