It repeatedly tries to read the card, eventually killing NFC reading entirely and requiring a reboot of the phone. Every once in a while it will manage to read a card, but more often than not when it does it will display "This card type is not supported. Only FIPS 201 compliant PIV cards can be read." This happens on cards that have already (after many tries) been successfully read. Sometimes it will also display "This card is empty". Cards tested were brand new PIV test cards issued by NIST. The first dozen, anyway, because I got tired of rebooting my phone. NFC tags work fine with this phone and I use them often.

This is great companion software to Intercede's MyID suite, or as a stand alone tool. It gives you convenient access to the RFID interface of your PIV using NFC technology integrated in most modern smart phones. I have found it very useful. Thanks Intercede!

When I open the app, it complains about not having a USB reader attached, and won't read from NFC at all.

Can't confirm USB support, but NFC support does not work on the Galaxy Note II.

Used it on my HTC Incredible 4G LTE and it works as expected when presented with an HSPD-12 PIV Card. Not sure if it is worth any money since it just does a simple read of the card from the contactless interface but it is nice to see that NFC is working.

Reads my HSDP-12 card fine on my Xperia S and my Nexus 7. Hopefully a sign of good things to come.

About this app

The MyID® CardChecker app from Intercede® lets you use your NFC enabled smartphone or tablet to read and display electronic information from a PIV, PIV-I or CIV smart card. Additionally if an ACR38 series smart card reader is plugged into the device, the MyID® CardChecker allows the extended printed information and photo to be read and displayed.

NFC:

Simply placing your NFC enabled smartphone or tablet near a card allows the CardChecker app to read the Card Holder Unique Identifier (CHUID) data available over the contactless interface and display it on your screen. Information such as the unique person identifier, organization name, who the card was issued by and when it expires lets you check that the information printed on the card’s surface matches the electronic data encoded on the card.
NOTE: Newer PIV cards may be incompatible with later versions of Android due to the short NFC timeout that is set within the operating system. Unfortunately, this cannot be overridden from our app and requires a modified build of Android to fix. Google are aware of this limitation - we await their fix!

USB:

Connect an ACR38 series smart card reader to your smartphone or tablet (you may also require a USB to microUSB converter cable such as the ET-R205UBEGSTD) and insert your smart card to view the CHUID information. Enter the correct PIN for the card and the CardChecker app can read additional information, including the photo, and display it on your screen allowing you to verify that the information printed on the card’s surface matches the data encoded on the card.

Solution Benefits:
• Verify that the contactless interface of the card is functioning
• Verify that the contact interface of the card is functioning
• Check that the data on the card is correctly formatted, and that the user knows the card PIN
• Verify that the printed information has not being altered, reducing identity fraud
• See exactly what data on your card is visible to others over the contactless interface
• Use existing readily available hardware to read card content, including Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)

About the MyID CardChecker:

For the NFC features to be available, the following is required:

• A smartphone or tablet with NFC support,
• Android OS version 2.3.7 or higher

Primary testing has been performed using the Samsung Galaxy SII, SIII and Google Nexus 7 and 10. Variations in NFC implementation may present issues on older versions and other hardware.

For the contact reader features to be available, the following is required:

• An Advanced Card Systems Ltd. ACR38 series card reader (e.g. ACR3801 or ACR38U),
• A USB to microUSB converter cable,
• A smartphone or tablet with USB host support,
• Android OS version 3.1 or higher

Primary testing has been performed using the Samsung Galaxy SIII and Google Nexus 7 and 10. Note: It is known that the Google Nexus 4 does not support USB host mode and therefore cannot be used with this app. Other devices may also not support the USB host mode that is required for this app to function correctly.
