Installation Instructions

This article outlines two straightforward methods for installing BSSID Logger on PC Windows and Mac.

Using BlueStacks

  1. Download the APK/XAPK file from this page.
  2. Install BlueStacks by visiting http://bluestacks.com.
  3. Open the APK/XAPK file by double-clicking it. This action will launch BlueStacks and begin the application's installation. If the APK file does not automatically open with BlueStacks, right-click on it and select 'Open with...', then navigate to BlueStacks. Alternatively, you can drag-and-drop the APK file onto the BlueStacks home screen.
  4. Wait a few seconds for the installation to complete. Once done, the installed app will appear on the BlueStacks home screen. Click its icon to start using the application.

This app is excellent for collecting useful wi-fi connection data that you can use to track connection stats over time. It is very easy to save the data into a spreadsheet also, since it is comma delimited.

About this app

Do you know which APs does a Wi-Fi client connect to as it moves from one place to the other in a venue that has full Wi-Fi coverage?

Do you want to know the RSSI measured, channel used and data rate established by the phone in real time?

This tool can help you.

It logs the BSSID of the connected AP, RSSI, channel and data rate every second. Logging continues when the app runs at background. With this information, you can tell:

- whether the client is connected to the best AP at its location or not
- whether the client roams to the expected APs as it moves from one location to the other or not
- the RSSI measured by the client right before it performs roaming
- whether bad experience on an app is caused by poor roaming behavior

With information captured by this tool, you can fine tune your Wi-Fi infrastructure to provide better roaming experience.

Note:
- Although the logging area is updated once per second, the update frequency of the RSSI, channel and data rate readings depends on the underlying OS. All of the devices I used for testing show new data every 3 seconds.
