This app does a very nice job of differentiating rough roads from smooth ones. When I am finished with a 'recording' session it uploads the data to the Carbin web site. On local roads I could easily determine my paths on their global web map...

Love the idea for the app and hope to see it improve! Already shared with dozens of my local neighbors. A few bugs that may need to be looked at. 1. After completing a drive and tapping "finish", the trip doesn't save and display in the "My Trips" tab. 2. Occasionally, the app will show up as a notification while at a standstill and say "updating location". upon opening the app from the notification, it appears to have restarted the most recent trip. I've tried to record 3 25+ mile trips so far and cannot see the trip data in the app. Will increase rating once fix is implemented.

I'm not sure if this is because I start recording without navigation or not but when I click finish, nothing happens until I start a new trip and then finish it again. It will then thank me and add the trip but show as a straight line between where I drove and finished and it won't show up on the site. I want to continue using Waze as a navigation tool but this for the data collection. Hopefully this is possible.

About this app

PLEASE READ BEFORE DOWNLOADING

VISION:

Carbin is going to be the first smart GPS navigation app with a heartbeat monitor for BOTH the road and your vehicle.

Data collected over time will help us add 3 new driving options to Carbin’s navigation:

(1) GREEN ECO route → minimizing emission levels with lowest fuel consumption.
(2) CHEAPEST route → minimizing trip’s cost by accounting for: (i) fuel consumption-based on quality of roads and traffic, (ii) tolls and (iii) any possible damage to your vehicle’s suspension due to quality of roads.
(3) COMFORT route → maximizing the comfort of your ride with the best quality roads and minimal traffic.

ABOUT the app:

Carbin is currently in the development stage and over the course of next several months the app is going to undergo many design changes, which will provide you with valuable feedback initially after your trip (and later throughout) on your fuel consumption, environmental impact as well as efficiency of your driving. Carbin will be able to monitor your vehicle’s suspension in real-time → how your vehicle responds to different road conditions and if any of the suspension parts need replacement. It will also tell you if there is anything wrong with your tires.

For now, however, Carbin needs your help in acquiring a large network of data in order to deploy its machine learning algorithms to derive information needed to achieve 3 new driving options and to be able to monitor the performance of your vehicle’s suspension for safety and to save you money on repairs.
In addition, with derived values Carbin is going to monitor performance of roads by building road quality and CO2 road repair saving potential maps for the entire world in order to help your local public entity identify where and when to repair roads. For more information on this global initiative, please visit https://fixmyroad.us (for now website is optimized only for desktop viewing).

HOW it works:

Use it as any other GPS navigation app. Search for place and then click “DRIVE”. Or if you want to record data without navigating click “RECORD”. Please remember that data is only recorded when you drive. Your data is most accurate when your phone is in a fixed position: it could be a phone holder, cup holder, dashboard compartment, your car’s floor etc.

DATA collected:

Data is ONLY shared when you press “Record”, or you start navigating. Files that you share can be easily viewed by exporting them from the “Downloads” section. Information shared include ONLY: GPS position and X, Y, Z, accelerations. Carbin requires no personal information to use the app and data shared is fully anonymous.
