About this app

Data capture tools, devices and software can be expensive but it doesn't need to be. In this app we provide a time-based assessment method for recording categorical abundance estimates or presence/absence data.

This app was designed to eliminate pen and paper or spreadsheets to collect data, and has an overarching goal of decreasing post-data collection cleanup. That is, we want to avoid errors such as the accumulation of unidentified species tag names that could take weeks to resolve.

The Braun-Blanquet data collection method is named after the botanist Josias Braun-Blanquet. To implement the Braun-Blanquet method an ecologist assigns a categorical estimate of abundance for each species. The original scale is often modified to meet specific research goals. For example: "0" (Absent; rarely recorded), "r" (1-3 individuals & < 5%), "+" (few individuals & < 5%), "1" (abundant & < 5%), "2a" (5% < x < 12.5%), "2b" (12.5% < x < 25%), "3" (25% < x < 50%), "4" (50% < x < 75%), "5" (> 75%).
