I can handle the banner ad, but when a full page pop-up interrupts counting (for a sporting event), and doesn't register any more taps until I close the ad, this hampers basic functionality. Look elsewhere if you need a reliable counter.

Well designed app, but the ads ruin it. Being a software developer myself I understand the need for ad revenue, but taking up the entire screen at random intervals in an app that is all about tapping to keep track of a number is just poor design. If the ads were isolated to certain times (e.g. after resetting the counter value) then it wouldn't be such a problem, but as it is, the adverts practically render this app useless. +1 star for the nice visuals/ otherwise intuitive user interface, but apart from that, pretty much ruined by greed.
