About this app

Plank Planner is a tool for trades people and the home handy person alike. The tool produces a flooring plan for timber floors that avoids the common racking problems. The use of the tool is equally applicable to racking walls.

WHY USE PLANK PLANNER:
• AVOIDS THE COMMON RACKING PROBLEMS. A system of rules is in place to avoid these problems: (1) Aligned joins - a join on the previous strip is at the same point as the proposed join for the current strip; (2) H-Joins - a join on the second previous strip is at the same point as the proposed join for the current strip; (3) Lightning join - each successive join is slightly forward of the last.
• HANDLES MULTIPLE AREAS. The space to lay the flooring is often a combination of difference sized areas. The tool takes into account adjacent areas when checking the racking rules.
• PRODUCES MULTIPLE PLAN REPRESENTATIONS. The plank plan is represented using plank sizing and plank layout for visual confirmation.
• EMAILS RESULTS. The plank plan is sent via email.
• REUSES WASTAGE. Off-cuts can be used as the plan is being created.
• RACKING RULES CAN BE ADJUSTED. The various settings that affect racking can be adjusted using a settings screen.

What's New
This is the first version. This is also our first android application so it only has the basic features and a limited user interface. If there is sufficient demand for the idea of a plank planner itself then the tool will be enhanced as necessary. Some features that may appear in new versions of the application:
- Permit specification of joist measurement.
- Add lightning rule (each successive join is slightly forward of the last). Early testing indicated that this wasn't needed.
- Support multiple plank widths.
- Improve the user interface, e.g. use +/- instead of text input field for plank quantity.

Tips
- Measure the plank width correctly, e.g. when measuring planks that incorporate a tongue and groove, do not include the tongue component.
- Keep a list of the excess material handy. If you are utilizing the off-cut feature, the planner will happily split long planks but sometimes it will be easier to make use of the excess material rather than cutting a plank.
