About this app

This app is a Pedometer with an optional periodic reminder to get you moving! Having a mostly inactive or sedentary lifestyle is one of the leading causes of cardiovascular disease and related circulatory problems. This coupled with the added stress of a sit down job can increase your risk of varicose veins, Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), and Pulmonary Embolism (PE). These problems lead to blood clotting, heart disease, cancer, and if left untreated even death. Note: The incidence rates of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism increases exponentially with age. To help lesson these risk factors each couple of hours during the work day one should get up and walk around to improve their circulation.

Enter the MovItMinder app.. The app has two modes of operations for reminders: polling via an event timer and free-form. In the polling mode the app allows you to keep tract of your level of activity and get it up to snuff during the coarse of the work day by giving you a periodic reminder to move. In the free-form mode the app just sits there in the background and keeps track of your steps as you go. In this mode when you bring up the MoveItMinder Notification you can review your progress at any time. In any event you can set the number of steps you want to take and let the app remind you when to get up and go.

How the app works:
With the phone in your pocket when you walk around the step counter sensor will indicate the number of steps you have taken. Please Note: if your phone does not have a step counter sensor the app will not function.

Setting Goals:
By taking 10,000 steps per day on the average you will burn 500 calories, which equals a pound of fat over the course of a week. Walking this many steps can result in burning up to 3,500 calories per week, which equates to one pound. On the average you will burn one calorie for every 20 steps.

The app triggers the step counter sensor when you save the parameters and put your phone in your pocket and start walking around. It runs as a service and sits in the background so you are free to do other things, and it does not care if the screen goes off.. it will still count your steps. Basic Notification feedback (sound/vibration) is given when you have met or missed your movement goals and a simple Radial Chart shows your progress (based on the 10,000 step a day recommendation or the number of steps you have entered). Simply exit the app to quit the service.. it will remember the period and number of steps and the basic configuration you have set as a goal for the next time you want to get moving reminders.

The McKinley Health Center at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign indicates that 2,500 steps or less per day is very inactive, up to 5,000 steps in inactive, 5,000 to 7,500 steps is moderately active, 7,501 to 10,000 steps is active and more than 10,000 is very active.

When Just Starting out:
When just starting out try to improve your calorie burn by adding 2,000 to 2,250 steps, the equivalent of a mile in distance and 100 calories in energy expenditure each day. The calories and distances are calculated on the average taking 20 steps as one calorie burned, and every 2,250 steps taken as one mile.

Standard Disclaimer:
This app is no substitute for the regular physical exercise you need to maintain a healthy life style. It is just a friendly reminder to get you up and walk around every so often to help you get some better circulation. Please see your doctor regularly for any health related issues.
