The Atkins diet is a low-carbohydrate diet that is typically prescribed for losing weight.

Over the past 12 years, more than 20 studies have shown that low-carb diets are successful for weight loss (without counting calories), which can lead to various changes in safety.

This diet claim that you can lose weight eating as much protein and fat as you want, as long as you avoid foods high in carbs.
The diet was originally regarded by the conventional health authorities as unhealthy and demonized, primarily because of the high saturated fat content. New studies have nevertheless shown that saturated fat is harmless.

The diet has since been extensively researched and has been shown to contribute to more weight loss than low-fat diets, and to greater reductions in blood sugar, HDL (the "healthy" cholesterol), triglycerides, and other health markers.
Despite being high in fat, it does not increase LDL (the "bad") cholesterol on average, though in a sub-set of individuals this does happen.

The main reason low-carb diets are so successful in weight loss is that when people lower the intake of carbohydrates and eat more protein, their appetite decreases and they end up eating less calories naturally without having to think about it.
