ওয়ার্ল্ড হেলথ ওর্গানাইজেসন (WHO) (World Health Organization) মানবদেহে এইচ.আই.ভি ভাইরাসের সঙ্ক্রমনকে প্যান্ডেমিক (Pandemic) হিসাবে চিহ্নিত করেছে। ১৯৮১ সালে ভাইরাসটি আবিষ্কারের পর থেকে ২০০৬ সাল পর্যন্ত এইডস রোগ কারনে ২কোটি ৫০ লক্ষেরও বেশী মানুষ মারা যায়। পৃথিবীর মোট জনসংখ্যার প্রায় ০.৬% এই ভাইরাস দ্বারা আক্রান্ত। ২০০৫ সালে এইডস ২২ থেকে ৩৩ লক্ষ মানুষের জীবন কেড়ে নেয় যার মধ্যে ৫ লক্ষ ৭০ হাজারের ও বেশী ছিল শিশু। এই মৃত্যুর এক-তৃতীয়াংশ ঘটে সাহারা-নিম্ন আফ্রিকা (Sub-Saharan Africa) অঞ্চলে। তখন ধারনা করা হয়েছিল ভাইরাসটি আফ্রিকার প্রায় ৭ কোটি মানুষকে আক্রান্ত করবে। রেট্রোভাইরাসরোধী (Antiretroviral drug) চিকিৎসা ভাইরাসটির সংক্রমনজনিত অসুস্থতা এবং মৃত্যু প্রবনতা দুটোই কমায় কিন্তু নিয়মিতভাবে এই চিকিৎসাসেবা সব দেশে পাওয়া যায় না।
