About this app
Noori is an initiative by Isha Arora and Natasha Arya of Delhi Public School, RK Puram.
Noori provides parents, primarily in underprivileged households, with a collection of trustable information and access to affordable pediatricians. We connect families who cannot afford healthcare, to those doctors who are willing to help so that these parents can receive discounted or free treatment for their child.
Furthermore, there is information related to immunization, common diseases affecting children, their symptoms, treatment, and home remedies. With this information parents can take better care of their children and prevent or treat diseases in them, eventually aiming to prevent child deaths in the country. Our app also helps advance the Sustainable Development Goal 3 Target 3.2, which is to end preventable deaths of newborns and under-5 children by 2030.
The application has been developed by Natasha Arya and Isha Arora, two high-school students at Delhi Public School, RK Puram.

The inspiration behind Noori - Why Noori?
*****
56 lakh children under the age of 5 years died in 2016. This translates into 15,000 under-five deaths per day. Through the first 5 years of life, the main causes of death are pneumonia, diarrhea and malaria. Malnutrition is the underlying contributing factor, making children more vulnerable to severe diseases. More than half of under-5 child deaths are due to diseases that are preventable and treatable through simple, affordable interventions. Strengthening healthcare to provide such interventions to all children will save many young lives. It is difficult to think of a greater injustice than robbing a child of a healthy life, it is after all a violation of his or her rights.
Furthermore, vaccines are available for some of the deadliest childhood diseases and can protect children from illness and death. Yet, more than 30 million children in the world are not immunized against treatable or preventable diseases.
India has the highest number of deaths under the age of 5 years in the world. The greatest factor affecting child death rate in India is the educational and socio-economic status of the child’s family. Under-5 mortality among children born in the poorest households is on average twice that of children born in the wealthiest households. Children from low-income households have to face rudimentary problems that affect their basic development and health. Their parents are uneducated; they are commonly unaware about vaccination of their child and are clueless about what to do in times of illnesses. They cannot afford pediatricians and proper healthcare, and face many hurdles before they can consult doctors. If children die or are unhealthy, it is a huge burden for the country whose future citizens will be neither as healthy nor as productive as they could have been. If current trends continue, some 60 million children under age 5 will die between 2017 and 2030. Thus, access to information and affordable healthcare is very important. This is where Noori steps in.
