When searching for an orthodontist or braces system one can easily get caught up in confusion. Should I get traditional braces? How about Invisible braces?

The fact is that most orthodontic braces systems will get the job done one way or another, sooner or later. It all depends on whether or not you want to be able to smile without obvious indication that you’re in braces, something attractive, and if you are willing to be in braces for 3 months to 4 years.

Invisible systems are great if you want to shift teeth in a manner that is inconspicuous. For the most part you wear a bleaching tray-like appliance for at least 22 hours a day, changing them out around every 2 weeks. Treatment time varies depending on the case but an average of 2.5 years is typical. Some drawbacks are that often corrections have to be made on the case midway through the treatment, virtually having to be redone from scratch. It can be frustrating for the patient as well as the doctor. Having to go to the dentist every two weeks for about 2.5 years can get tiring (time away from school or work, traffic, waiting) and frustrating, and the trays can easily be lost.

Traditional braces will do the job as well. Like invisible systems often teeth need to be pulled and treatment may take an average of 2.5 years; moving the part of the tooth you can see, the crown, on the first part of the treatment and the part of the tooth within the bone, the root, on subsequent years. This method of shifting teeth is based on a 115 year old arbitrary concept.
