About this app

What is bronchitis?

Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchial tubes, the airways that carry air to your lungs. It causes a cough that often brings up mucus. It can also cause shortness of breath, wheezing, a low fever, and chest tightness.

Both adults and children can get bronchitis. There are two main types of bronchitis: acute and chronic.

 Acute bronchitis is usually caused by an bacterial and viral infection or, more rarely, by an exposure to chemicals. In children, viruses are the most common infectious cause. Severe cases of bronchitis may progress to pneumonia.

 Chronic Bronchitis is a common condition that includes coughing and/or sputum production for three years or more and shortness of breath. The airways in the lungs become swollen and produce more mucus. Cigarette smoking is the most common cause, although air pollution and allergies also may lead to chronic bronchitis.

Signs & symptoms

 Acute bronchitis symptoms generally include cough with mucus, chest discomfort, fever and extreme tiredness.

 Chronic bronchitis symptoms may include cough and production of excessive phlegm. It may also cause narrowing and plugging of the breathing tubes (bronchi) making it difficult to breathe. Other symptoms may include cyanosis (bluish colour of the lips and skin) and oedema (swelling of feet).

You can improve your overall well-being with a well-balanced healthy diet and regular physical activity. You could also ask your family doctor for influenza and pneumococcal pneumonia vaccinations.

As much as possible, avoid respiratory irritants such as second-hand smoke, dust, and other air pollutants.
