切ない感情・真剣な心情を表すため、短調の曲が多いとされているが、詳細な統計は無い。長調で書かれているものは、ヨナ抜き音階のものが多い。


この時期のレコード歌謡において同時代的に「演歌」と呼ばれた作品、ジャンルはないが、それに類する曲調の楽曲がある。

大正末期、「船頭小唄」が大流行する。関東大震災後の世相に合致したもので、厭世的な歌詞やヨナ抜き短音階などの特徴が後の演歌の音楽的特徴を先取りする者であった。これは演歌師による作品ではないが、最初に楽譜として売り出されたのが演歌師によって歌い広められており、それが話題を呼んで映画化、無声映画であったため演歌師が実演するというレコード界と演歌師のコラボレーションで知名度を上げた。また、演歌師にあっては鳥取春陽が作曲を得意としており、「船頭小唄」の作風を踏襲した「籠の鳥」をレコード発売してヒットする。鳥取春陽はその後、オリエントレコードの専属作曲家へと転身した。



平成に入ると、若者世代が歌う歌をJ-POPと呼称するようになり、主流のレコード歌謡のほとんどを占めた。それ以外の歌は一括して「演歌・歌謡曲」と呼ばれるようになり、オリコンの分類もその2本立てになる。「歌謡曲」とは本来は大衆的レコード歌謡全般を指していたものだが、やがて特定の時代の特定のジャンルの楽曲のことを指すようになった。1990年代の渋谷系を嚆矢として、サブカルチャー・懐古趣味としてこれらをまとめて扱う傾向が生まれた。
