The zombies are coming! Are you brave enough to join the Lowlands zombie apocalypse? Do you think you have what it takes to survive?
The goal of this game is to stay uninfected for as long as possible. But watch out! You and your fellow Lowlands friends are being tracked down by zombies. You see them on the map. They can turn you into a zombie if you come too close. As a zombie your goal is to infect as many other humans as possible. You infect humans by walking around the Lowlands grounds. Infection happens based on the location of the zombie and the victim, proximity and length of time. When you have infected a human, make a selfie together! This will be shown on a big screen at Lowlands. Contenders sign up through the game to become player in the LowlandZ game. During the Lowlands festival there are multiple playing rounds. Can the humans survive the zombies?
By spreading a virtual epidemic via a mobile game, we are researching how we can improve the existing models about infection spreading. In the end, we try to predict the beginning of real life epidemics faster and better than we are doing now.
The LowlandZ app uses GPS and this costs battery. Using a batterypack while playing the game is advised. Bring your own or visit us at the Lowlands science stand to borrow one.

The data is collected through the mobile phone and stored on secure servers in The Netherlands. During the research the following data is collected and stored:
How long you are in the game
Your gender
The name you enter
(GPS) location of your phone
What time you were on a specific location
Your status when you were on a specific location
Deze app werkt alleen wanneer je op het Lowlands terrein bent.
De zombies komen eraan! Durf jij mee te doen met de zombie apocalyps? Denk jij dat je het in je hebt om te overleven?
Het doel van de game is je laten ‘tracken’ op lowlands en proberen niet geïnfecteerd te raken door het zombievirus. Als je geïnfecteerd raakt zou dat kunnen veranderen is het juist het doel om zoveel mogelijk andere mensen te infecteren. De enige manier van zombies om andere mensen te infecteren is om rond te lopen op lowlands. Infectie gebeurt op basis van locatie van zombie en slachtoffer, nabijheid en tijdsduur. Wanneer je een mens hebt geïnfecteerd kan je samen een selfie maken! Deze wordt ook op een groot scherm op Lowlands getoont. Respondenten melden zich online aan in de game en worden daarna speler in de lowlandZ game. Er zijn tijdens Lowlands meerdere speelronden.
Door een virtuele epidemie te verspreiden via de mobiele telefoon, proberen we te onderzoeken hoe we de bestaande modellen rondom infectie ziekte verspreiding kunnen verbeteren. Uiteindelijk willen we de start van real life epidemieën sneller en beter voorspellen dan hoe we dat nu doen.
Het gebruik van de LowlandZ app gebruikt GPS en dus batterij. Gebruik van een batterypack tijdens het spelen wordt aangeraden. Neem je eigen mee of kon naar onze science tent om er eentje te lenen.

De gegevens die via de game verzameld worden dient als input voor het beantwoorden van de vraagstellingen. Data wordt verkregen via de mobiele telefoon en opgeslagen op beveiligde servers in Nederland. Tijdens het onderzoek worden de volgende gegevens verzameld en opgeslagen:
Hoe lang je in het spel bent, je geslacht, de naam die je opgeeft, (GPS) locatie telefoon, tijdstip tijdens locatiebepaling, status tijdens locatiebepaling.
