Matthew Henry was born in Flintshire, England in 1662. He became a Bible commentator and English Presbyterian pastor.
He was born in Broad Oak, a country house on the borders of Flintshire, Wales and Shropshire, England. In 1687 he became a minister of a Presbyterian congregation in Chester. He moved again in 1712 to Mare Street, Hackney.
Matthew became well known for the Old and New Testament Exposition (1708-1710), a biblical commentary covering the whole of the Old Testament, the Gospels and Acts, in the New Testament. After the author's death, the work was completed (Romans through Revelation) by a number of ministers, and edited in 1811.
Its high moral tone and simple piety, with practical application, combined with the sustained flow of its English style, made it one of the most popular works of its kind. Matthew Henry's Commentary provides a great help for the exhaustive study of the Bible. His comments are still in use today.
