歴史は、何かしらの事物が時間的に変遷したありさま、あるいはそれに関する文書や記録のことをいう。主に国家や文明など人間の社会を対象とする。記述されたことを念頭に置いている。ヴィルヘルム・ヴィンデルバントの科学分類に拠れば、「自然科学が反復可能な一般的法則であるのに対し、歴史科学が対象とする歴史は反復が不可能である一回限りかつ個性を持つもの」と定義している。また、現在に至る歴史を「来歴」と言う。

【歴史の意味】
「歴史」とは、少なくとも二つの意味を有している。一つは、現実に存在する「もの」が変遷する様そのものを言い換えて「歴史」と定義するものである。しかしその経緯は保存されることは無く、やがて消える。もう一つの「歴史」の意味は、この消え行く変遷を対象化して記述・記録された結果を指し、「歴史記述」と言うことができる。 記述・記録される、または複数残した何らかの経時的事象を分析・系列化して初めて「歴史」を構築する。ある少数民族が文字または別な手段の歴史記述を残さず、しかも史料をただひとつしか示さなかったとすれば、彼らが現実に存在し「歴史」を刻んでも、後世の文明にとって存在の歴史はあると推測できても、歴史の変遷を知ることは出来ない。それどころか痕跡を残さなかったものは、その存在さえ無かったも同然である。

このように後世に認識できる「歴史」とは、少なくとも認識可能な出来事の断片が残存していることが必要な条件となる。これには濃淡があり、対象・時代・地域などが影響し、人類を対象とした民族の歴史の場合には、彼らが歴史を記述することに関心を払う程度にも左右される。
以後は、「後世に認識された歴史」を対象とする。


偉人（いじん）とは、歴史に遺るような、並外れて優れた人間のこと。

偉人の『偉』は、「並外れる」「特別で優れる」「めったにない程に優れる」を意味する字である。したがって、内実を伴う本来の意味で「偉い」人を指す。

対義語は凡人または庸人。

類義語としては『偉才』『聖』がある。『逸材』『秀才』は優れているが卑近な人物を指して使用されるのに対して、『偉人』『偉才』『聖』は卑近な人物には追い越せない高遠な人物のみを指して使用されている。又、『聖』という語は、「詩聖」「楽聖」「画聖」ように、芸術界の偉人を指して使用されている。尚、『逸材』『秀才』『偉人』『偉才』『聖』共に、貴賎を問わず使用される語である。
