Lançada em julho de 1970, a Revista O Carreteiro nasceu como parte de uma família de revistas técnicas da Editora Abril, cujo objetivo era levar informações para os motoristas de caminhão. Era um período de comunicação difícil, com o País governado pelos militares, e os carreteiros não contavam, na época, com uma publicação específica para a categoria.
