I recently installed this app and am thoroughly enjoying it. The reference section is laid out well and with just one touch you get to see all the information you need (collar, sleeve, shoulder, and cover) for the insignia. It's quite easy to scroll through that. I do like that the app is up-to-date with the very recent revival of the US Navy Warrant Officer (W-1). I would recommend a couple of changes, though. First, is to have the Warrant Officers listed as "Warrant" since they are prefaced in paygrade by W or CW and a note that CW2~5 are considered commissioned. Right now the app has them as "Officer". Next is to include the Coast Guard, and the Commissioned Corps of both the USPHS Commissioned Corps (with both the names for each rank) and the NOAA Commissioned Officer Corps. Even without those changes, it's still 5 stars. It would have benefitted me and my platoon-mates when we went through BCT ages ago! I just realized that the Navy WO1 is using the Boatswain's insignia. As the Navy only has WO1 for one field, shouldn't the insignia use that instead of the Boatswain's?

This app is terrible. There's no organization. You HAVE to start with navy, and the scoring is seemingly arbitrary. Instead of "8 out of 10" you'd recieve a score of maybe 4500? You must know collar, shoulder, and sleeve markings and there's no real study materials. DO NOT recommend this app. No real association is built by using it. This is what happens when the government spends money.

This really helped me study and recognize the varies Navy Ranks in a fun way! It does also have the ranks of the other branches which is good!

Good app to know all of the different ranks of the United States military. The only one flaw it has is that they forgot the U.S. Coast Guard. I enjoy the quizzes...πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡²

I was looking for an app like this but It doesn't have it for the Coast Guard which I need but other than that I would recommend to anyone who needs it for other branches.

About this app

An Official US Navy mobile application, produced by the Navy PMW 240 Program and NETC

The US Military Rank & Reference app provides a fun, easy way to learn Military ranks and insignia across all branches of the Military. As most service members know, learning how to recognize who to salute and address properly by rank or uniform insignia is an integral part of any Military career.
Part of the e-Sailor series of mobile apps, US Military Rank & Reference uses a short game scenario for quick and enhanced learning. The game randomly generates elements associated with Military rank, including collar devices, insignia on sleeves, and shoulder boards. The game provides multiple-choice visual selections and provides points for each correct answer. If a player answers incorrectly, the app shows them the correct insignia to reinforce learning.

A timing element in the game awards additional points for timely correct answers. By selecting the correct answer before the timer runs out, a user earns bonus points. However, there’s no stress here – a user only plays against the app. You begin with Navy ranks from 0-4,999 points. This progresses to Navy/Marine at 5,000-8,999 points and, at the highest level, Navy/Marine, Air Force, and Army at 9,000+ points. The user can see and identify all ranks across the Navy – from basic training when they are a Seaman to Chief Petty Officer to ranks of senior Admirals. Or they can switch their setting to the Marine Corps and view and identify ranks from Private to Gunnery Sergeant to General. Army and Air Force ranks and insignia are also included in the app.
The US Military Rank & Reference app also includes a sortable reference area to review full sets of cross-service rank indicators for a variety of Military personnel: Enlisted, Non-Commissioned Officers (NCO), and Officers. The app is a great visual tool for learning Military ranks and can be revisited frequently by anyone desiring refresher training.

The e-Sailor initiative was instituted by the Master Chief Petty Office of the Navy. e-Sailor leverages state-of-the-art mobile technologies to transform training and enhance curriculum delivery methodologies at Recruit Training Command. The e-Sailor series of mobile apps is being developed to support this effort. The goal of e-Sailor is to increase the quality of work and quality of life for the 21st Century Sailor!
