ಹನ್ನೆರಡನೆಯ ಶತಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಅಕ್ಕಮಹಾದೇವಿ, ನಿರ್ಮಲಶೆಟ್ಟಿ ಮತ್ತು ಸುಮತಿಯರ ಮಗಳು.ಅಕ್ಕಮಹಾದೇವಿ ಕನ್ನಡದ ಪ್ರಥಮ ಮಹಿಳಾ ಕವಿಯತ್ರಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಚಿಕ್ಕ ವಯಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲೆ ಸಕಲ ಸುಖವನ್ನು ತ್ಯಜಿಸಿದ ಅಕ್ಕ, ಎದುರಿಸಿದ ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆಗಳು ಬಹಳಷ್ಟು. ಸಾಕ್ಷಾತ್ ಶಿವ ( ಮಲ್ಲಿಕಾರ್ಜುನ)ನನ್ನು ಪತಿ ಎಂದು ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸಿ, ಲೌಕಿಕ ಜಗತ್ತನ್ನು ಧಿಕ್ಕರಿಸಿ, ಕೇಶಾಂಬರೆಯಾಗಿ ನಡೆದ ಅಕ್ಕ, ಹಲವಾರು ಭಕ್ತರಿಗೆ ಮಾದರಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದಾಳೆ. ಅಕ್ಕಾ ಮಹಾದೇವಿ ಹನ್ನೆರಡನೇ ಶತಮಾನ (ಸು. 1130-1160) ಕನ್ನಡ ಕವಿ, ಸಂತ ಮತ್ತು ವಿರಶೈವ ಭಕ್ತಿ ಚಳವಳಿಯ ಅತೀಂದ್ರಿಯ. ವಿರಾಶೈವರು ಹನ್ನೆರಡನೇ ಶತಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಮತ್ತು ಆಧ್ಯಾತ್ಮಿಕ ಕ್ರಾಂತಿಕಾರಿಗಳಾಗಿದ್ದರು.
ಶರಣೆ ಅಕ್ಕಮಹಾದೇವಿಯವರು ಜನಿಸಿದ್ದು ಶಿವಮೊಗ್ಗ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆ, ಶಿಕಾರಿಪುರ-ಶಿರಾಳ ಕೊಪ್ಪದ ನಡುವೆ ಇರುವ ಉಡುತಡಿ ಅಥವಾ ಉಡಗಣಿ ಇಲ್ಲವೆ ಉಡುಗಣಿ ಎಂದೇ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ದವಾಗಿರುವ ಪುಟ್ಟ ಗ್ರಾಮದಲ್ಲಿ.
ಇಂತಹ ಉಡುತಡಿಯಿಂದ ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ತ್ಯಜಿಸಿ ಹೊರಟ ಅಕ್ಕಮಹಾದೇವಿಯವರು ಮುಂದೆ [ಬಸವ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣ]ದ ಅನುಭವ ಮಂಟಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಲ್ಲಮಪ್ರಭು, ಬಸವಣ್ಣ, ಚೆನ್ನಬಸವಣ್ಣ ಸಿದ್ಧರಾಮ ಮೊದಲಾದ ಶರಣರೊಡನೆ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣದ ಕ್ರಾಂತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ತಮ್ಮನ್ನು ತಾವೂ ತೊಡಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡರಲ್ಲದೇ, "ಚನ್ನಮಲ್ಲಿಕಾರ್ಜುನ" ಎಂಬ ಅಂಕಿತ ನಾಮದಲ್ಲಿ ವಚನ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ (ಶರಣ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ) ತಮ್ಮದೇ ಆದ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಸೇವೆಯನ್ನು ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಅಕ್ಕಮಹಾದೇವಿ ಶರಣ ಚಳುವಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಎತ್ತರದ ಚೇತನವಾಗಿ ಮೂಡಿ ಬಂದ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿತ್ವ. ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ವಚನಗಳನ್ನು ಬರೆದ ಮೊದಲ ಮಹಿಳೆ ಇವಳು ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಇತರ ವಿರಶೈವ ಸಂತರು ಬಸವಣ್ಣ, ಸಿದ್ಧರಾಮ, ಅಲ್ಲಮಪ್ರಭು ಮುಂತಾದವರು ಅವರಿಗೆ ‘ಅಕ್ಕ’ ಎಂಬ ಗೌರವದ ಪದವನ್ನು ಅರ್ಪಿಸಿದರು.
ಅಕ್ಕನ ಕಾಲಕ್ಕೆ ತುಂಬಾ ಹತ್ತಿರದವನಾದ ಹರಿಹರ ಮಹಾಕವಿಯು ರಚಿಸಿರುವ 'ಮಹಾದೇವಿಯಕ್ಕಗಳ ರಗಳೆ' ಮತ್ತು ಸ್ವತಃ ಅಕ್ಕಮಹಾದೇವಿಯವರೇ ರಚಿಸುವ ವಚನಗಳೂ, ಅವರ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿತ್ವವನ್ನು ಕಟ್ಟಿ ಕೊಡುವಲ್ಲಿ ಮಹತ್ವದ ಪಾತ್ರವನ್ನು ವಹಿಸುತ್ತವೆ. ವಚನಕಾರರಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಕಿರಿಯ ವಯಸ್ಸಿನ ಅನುಭಾವಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದರೂ ಸಹ, ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟ ಜೀವನಾನುಭವವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ ಕಾರಣದಿಂದ, ಅವರ ಬರಹಗಳು ಗಮನಾರ್ಹವಾಗಿವೆ. ಕೊನೆಗೆ ತನ್ನ ಇಷ್ಟದೈವ ಮಲ್ಲಿಕಾರ್ಜುನನಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರಿಶೈಲದ ಕದಳಿವನದಲ್ಲಿಐಕ್ಯರಾದರು ಅಕ್ಕಮಹಾದೇವಿ.
