About this app

La novela más afamada de Harriet Beecher Stowe, escrita en 1852 y publicada en partes en un periódico abolicionista, ocasionó un enérgico debate sobre la esclavitud, logrando la venta de medio millón de copias en un lapso de cinco años. La cabaña del tío Tom materializa el sentir de los abolicionistas de su tiempo, su narrativa refiere escenas del diario vivir y su lectura despierta fortísimas emociones. La irradiación de esta obra fue uno de los disparadores que precipitó la guerra civil estadounidense.

La cabaña del tío Tom rápidamente fue considerada mundialmente como una obra maestra, y si bien en un principio fue editada en tomos, alcanzó el éxito total solo cuando se publicó como libro. Se tradujo a más de veinte idiomas. Mas allá de su estructura irregular, como todas las obras de Stowe, la lectura de La cabaña de tío Tom es absolutamente atrapante. El tema principal de este libro es la esclavitud, pero comunicada de una manera cruda y realista, así, el lector se involucra de tal forma en el relato que registra vivamente las penurias que los personajes sobrellevan. El principal protagonista, Tom, es un esclavo negro de avanzada edad y encantadora persona. Su «dueño» —en la novela se hace énfasis de como los esclavos eran tratados cual objetos— Mr. Shelby, se ve obligado a vender a un comerciante de esclavos execrable, Mr. Haley a Tom y al hijo de la esclava de su mujer, el pequeño Harry, porque por ellos dos le pagarán una buena cantidad de dinero que le salvará de la ruina económica. Tom y sus allegados quedarán desamparados a su suerte.
