About this app

With this selection of dinosaur documentaries, explore and discover the secrets and wonders of the Jurassic era until the end of the Mesozoic era.
Dinosaurs are a group of sauropsids that appeared during the Triassic period. Although the exact origin and its early diversification is the subject of active research, the current scientific consensus places its origin between 231 and 243 million years ago. They were the dominant terrestrial vertebrates for 135 million years, from the beginning of the Jurassic (about 200 million years ago) until the end of the Cretaceous (66 million years ago), when most of the dinosaur groups became extinct during the mass extinction of the Cretaceous-Tertiary that ended the Mesozoic Era. The fossil record indicates that birds evolved from theropod dinosaurs during the Jurassic period and, consequently, many taxonomists consider that birds form a subgroup within dinosaurs. Some birds survived this event, and their descendants continue the lineage of the dinosaurs to this day.
Although the word dinosaur means terrible lizard, the name is a bit misleading, since dinosaurs are not lizards. Instead, they represent a separate group of reptiles that, like many extinct forms, do not show traits traditionally seen as typical of a reptile, such as the posture extended to the sides of the limbs or ectothermia. In addition, many prehistoric animals, including mosasaurs, ichthyosaurs, pterosaurs, plesiosaurs and pelicosaurs (Dimetrodon), are popularly conceived as dinosaurs, but are not taxonomically classified as such. Throughout the first half of the twentieth century, before the birds were recognized as dinosaurs, most of the scientific community believed that the dinosaurs had been slow and cold-blooded. However, most research conducted since the 1970s has indicated that all dinosaurs were active animals with high metabolism and numerous adaptations for social interaction.
