Kandar Alangaram was written by Sanit Arunagirinatha, the author of Thirupugazh, which is considered as one of the greatest poem collections praising Lord Subrahmanya.

Kandar Alangaram, consisting of 102 verses, is a marvelous creation of poetry that portrays the magnificence of Muruga and presents Him in all His splendor and glory before us.

Apart from being an ornament that adds to the beauty of Muruga, Kandar Alangaram describes the various qualities of Muruga, His benevolence, His knowledge, His valour, the power of His Vel, the exquisitely beautiful peacock and the ensign of the rooster.

It describes how Muruga comes into our lives in various roles.

Arunagiri was born in Thiruvannamalai, a town in Tamil Nadu. His father died soon after his birth and his mother and sister brought him up in the rich cultural and religious traditions.

கந்தர் அலங்காரம் என்பது அருணகிரிநாதர் இயற்றிய முருகன் பற்றிய பக்திப் பாடல்கள் கொண்ட நூலாகும். தமிழ்ச் சிற்றிலக்கிய வரிசையில் பாடப்பெற்ற முதல் அலங்கார நூல் இதுவாகும்.

காப்பு பாடல் ஒன்றும், நூற்பயன் பாடல் எழும் சேர்ந்து மொத்தம் 108 பாடல்கள் கொண்ட இந்நூல் முருகனிடமிருந்து ஞான உபேதசம் பெறுவதைப் போன்று பாடல்கள் அமைந்துள்ளன.

இந்நூல் வெவ்வேறு வேளைகளில் அருணகிரிநாதரால் இயற்றப்பட்ட பாடல்களின் தொகுப்பு என்றும், முருகனால் உபதேசம் பெற்றப்பட்ட போது எழுதப்பட்டது என்றும் இருவேறு கருத்துக்கள் நிலவுகின்றன.

அருணகிரிநாதர் உலக வாழ்வை வெறுத்து உயிரை மாய்த்துக் கொள்ள துணிந்தபோது இவரைக் காப்பாற்றி முருகன் வழங்கிய உபதேசங்களைப் பற்றி இந்நூல் கூறுகிறது.
