تدور أحداث الرواية حول الدكتور صلاح الحكيم ، طبيب يحب عمله ويخلص له، يتفانى في تقديم المساعدات للغير، يحب وطنه ويقدسه إلى أبعد الحدود.
يلتقي الدكتور صلاح بالدكتورة أحلام فتعجبه ويعجبها ويقعا في الحب، ولكن كم من جدارٍ وجدار يفصل بين هذه القلوب التي أضناها الحب ؟؟ إنه والد أحلام عبد الغني الدهبي، الرجل الجشع الذي يقف عثرة في طريقهما، هذا الرجل الذي يتاجر بكل شيء حتى بأقرب الناس له ليصل إلى ما يريده، رجل بشع، لا مانع عنده من أن يدوس فوق جثث الأبرياء ليكوّن المزيد من الثروة.
تقوم الرواية في بنائها على التذكر، فلقاء فتاة تشبه أحلام تلك الإنسانة الحاضرة الغائبة أنعشت ذاكرة الدكتور صلاح وبدأ يتذكر أحلام الرقيقة، الشفافة، وكم من وردة خلفت شوكة ؟؟؟
أحلام التي رفضت أعمال والدها من نهب وسرقة وقتل، وذهبت إلى المحكمة بدافع من ضميرها الحي لتعترف بأن والدها كان وراء جرائم لا حدود لها، منها انهيار بناء فوق رؤوس أصحابه، ومنها قتله لنورا تلك الفتاة الطيبة النقية، البريئة، التي رفضت الظلم وصرخت في وجهه فكان جزاؤها الموت.
يُعري الدكتور عماد زكي في روايته هذا المجتمع القائم على ثلة من الأشخاص الذين يسمون أنفسهم برجال الأعمال وهم ليسوا أكثر من رجال هدم لكل القيم الإنسانية السامية، رجال مصلحة، وأمام مصلحتهم تنحني كل الجبهات المريضة.
أسلوب الرواية أسلوب شيق، جميل، ممتع، وسهل، أسلوب راقي يبتعد عن الفحش في اللفظ ويرقى بالكلمة لتعانق كل نفسٍ أبية راضية.
