Mengingat fungsi ilmu hadis sangat menentukan terhadap pemakaian nas sebagai pedoman beramal, tidak sedikit para ulama yang memberikan tanggapan atas ketentuan hukum mempelajari ilmu hadis.

Imam Sufyan Sauri berkata (ertinya), "Saya tidak mengenal ilmu yang lebih utama bagi orang yang berhasrat menundukkan wajahnya di hadapan Allah selain daripada ilmu hadis. Orang-orang sangat memerlukan ilmu ini, sampai kepada soal-soal kecil sekalipun, seperti makan dan minum, memerlukan petunjuk dari al-hadits. Mempelajari ilmu hadis lebih utama daripada menjalankan salat dan puasa sunah, kerana mempelajari ilmu ini adalah fardu kifayah, sedangkan solat sunah dan puasa sunah hukumnya sunnah."

Imam Asy-Syafii berkata, "Demi umurku, soal ilmu hadis ini termasuk tiang agama yang paling kukuh dan keyakinan yang paling teguh. Tidak digemari untuk menyiarkannya selain oleh orang-orang yang jujur lagi takwa, dan tidak dibenci untuk menyiarkannya selain oleh orang-orang munafik lagi celaka."

Al-Hakim menandaskan, "Andaikata tidak banyak orang yang menghafal sanad hadis, nescaya menara Islam roboh dan niscaya para ahli bidah berkiprah membuat hadis palsu dan memutarbalikkan sanad."
