Comparing this to the Baby can read series, I believe it can be enriched if the words were shown first then the corresponding image. This may force the child to associate the word with meaning instead of all of it on one page. Children tend to look at the pictures first and may barely look at the words unless pointed at. Numbers section was good and goes up to 10. The games were appropriate. Ads aren't that bad just don't hand the phone to your child. Overall, pretty descent for a free educational app.

Just feel as if there are better apps out there than this. Its not the worst but definitely understand why its a free app. And its got way too many ads within it.

Reading the responses from Velgreen has totally turned me off of this app before I even opened it. Velgreen is very combative and almost rude to a lot of people on here. Very unprofessional.

Critical aspects of a child's brain is established well before they enter school, and it is the experiences during these sensitive periods of development that play a critical role in shaping the capacities of the brain

Reading makes your child SMARTER, and the very act of reading can help children compensate for modest levels of cognitive ability! [v - Cunningham, Stanovich]

Your child's vocabulary at age 3 predicts his or her first grade reading success, and...

Vocabulary and reading ability in first grade strongly predicts grade 11 outcomes, and...

Third grade reading skills directly influences high school graduation. Children who cannot read proficiently by grade 3 are four times more likely to leave school without a diploma than proficient readers!

And if you think... "why do I need to teach my child to read when they'll learn to read at school, and what are the chances that my child will be a poor reader?" Then you need to THINK AGAIN! Because..

67% of all Grade 4 students cannot read at a proficient level! According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress, of those 67%, 33% read at just the BASIC level, and 34% CANNOT even achieve reading abilities of the lowest basic level! The NAEP is the only ongoing survey of what students know and tracks their performance in various academic subjects for the United States.

The U.K. government's Department of Education reported that 42% of children left school without achieving a basic level of functional English - Over 100,000 students leave schools functionally illiterate in the UK each year!

The Australian Government Department of Education reported that 33% of all year 5 students CANNOT meet the benchmark literacy skills, and in Canada, 42% of Canadians are considered semi-illiterate! Unfortunately, non of these above shocking literacy statistics should be surprising because..

"Many in-service teachers are not knowledgeable in the basic concepts of the English language. They do not know how to address the basic building blocks of language and reading." - This is NOT a statement that we are making, rather, this is a finding from a study done at the Texas A&M University. Their study was aptly titled "Why elementary teachers might be inadequately prepared to teach reading."

The above statistics and findings are not something we pulled out of thin air. They are reported by government agencies on the current state of the literacy levels of school children.

Poor reading ability and literacy skills lead to reduced opportunities in life, and worse yet, "being illiterate is a guaranteed ticket to a dead end life with no skills and no future.
