About this app

Ukulele notes

Are you wanting to learn to play the ukulele, but don't know where to begin? Well, you've come to the right place. We've broken down how to play ukulele chords into an easy digestible format. Learn a section at a time, or sit down and pull up a chair to memorize the ukutabs.

Easy ukulele

Uke chord and banjo charts have four vertical lines that represent the four strings of your ukulele. If you’re familiar with playing guitar, you may notice that reading a uke tab is very similar to reading a guitar tab! The first vertical line on the chart displayed above can be your thickest string, which is usually your G string. The first string, however, is not always a G string, and it’s also not always your thickest string. A ukulele can be tuned in many different ways such as the re-entrant method. Depending on the tuning that you use, the order of the strings may be different. Because many ukuleles use the re-entrant method, the thickest string is commonly the C string, not the G.

Uke strings

Basic ukulele chords aren’t all as easy as the C chord, which requires pressing on one string with one finger, but they’re all basic to playing a variety of tunes on the ukulele. So start with the commonly used chords here and branch out as your skills and ukulele songs.

Best ukulele songs

Let’s be honest, you didn’t start learning the ukulele to play “Mary Had a Little Lamb” or “She’ll Be Comin’ Round the Mountain.” But too often that’s what you’re stuck doing as a beginning ukulele player. It’s boring, and it’s a little bit discouraging.

With just a few simple chords and basic strumming patterns, you can be playing popular tunes and fun songs on the ukulele in no time. In fact, you can play many awesome ukulele songs with only four easy chords. These popular songs for ukulele use only the C, Am, F, and G chords. We’ve included a video tutorial and links to the easy ukulele tab for each song to help you get started playing uke chords.

Ukulele chords for beginners

It is important as a budding musician to learn the easy things first. Not only will you make noticeable progress faster but you'll enjoy the journey too. We would never recommend a beginner to try to play a song with 12 different chords, or ask them to fingerpick, or even to play an advanced strumming pattern. It is setting them up for failure.

We like to teach four chords to start with to start to unlock a lot of popular songs. Once these four are mastered you can start to learn one or two more as they come up in songs.
