El objeto de las señales es transmitir órdenes e informaciones desde la vía, las estaciones y los
trenes.

- Indicadoras: las que complementan las órdenes de las señales fundamentales.
- De limitación de velocidad: las que imponen restricciones a la marcha de los trenes, como
consecuencia de circunstancias particulares de la vía o de las instalaciones.
- Señales portátiles
Las que pueden ser utilizadas o hechas por el personal en cualquier momento y lugar.
- Señales de los trenes
Las que llevan los trenes en sus testeros de cabeza o de cola.
