Što je visoki krvni tlak?
Visoki krvni tlak ili hipertenzija označava visoki tlak (napetost) u arterijama. Arterije su krvne žile koje odvode krv iz srca u sva tkiva i organe. Normalni krvni tlak je 120/80; krvni tlak između 120/80mmHg i 139/89 mmHg nazivamo “pre-hipertenzijom”, a krvni tlak 140/90 mmHg i veći smatramo povišenim.

Gornja brojka, sistolički krvni tlak, odgovara tlaku u arterijama kada se srce kontrahira i izbacuje krv u arterije. Donji broj, dijastolički tlak,predstavlja tlak u arterijama kada se srce relaksira nakon kontrakcije. Dijastolički tlak odražava najniži tlak kojem su izložene arterije.

Povišenje sistoličkog i/ili dijastoličkog tlaka povećava rizik za razvoj bolesti srca,bubrega, oka, moždanog udara i ateroskleroze (otvrdnuća krvnih žila).

Zbog toga, dijagnoza povišenog krvnog tlaka je veoma važna kao i napori da se navedeni tlak snizi jer se time preveniraju komplikacije.

Ranije se mislilo kako je povišeni dijastolički tlak mnogo važniji faktor rizika nego povišeni sistolički tlak ali se danas zna da kod ljudi u 50-tim godinama kao i starijima, sistolička hipertenzija predstavlja veliki rizik.

The American Heart Association je utvrdila da povišeni krvni tlak zahvaća približno svaku treću odraslu osobu u SAD-u. Također je ustanovljeno da visoki krvni tlak zahvaća i 2 mil. djece i mladih u SAD-u, a the Journal of the American Medical Association izvještava da ih je mnogo još nedijagnosticirano.
