Ditinjau dari terminologi Ilmu Arudh berarti Ilmu untuk mengetahu\benar atau rusaknya pola puisi Arab tradisional dan perubahan-perubahan yang terjadi di dalamnya.
Objek kajian Ilmu ini adalah puisi arab tradisional, yaitu puisi arab yang masih terikat dengan pola puis). Sedangkan tujuan umum mempelajari ilmu ini adalah agar mampu membedakan antara puisi
dengan selain puisi dan untuk memelihara dari perbuatan mencampur-adukkan antara satu pola puisi dengan pola lainnya serta menghindari terjadinya perubahan-perubahan yang dilarang.
Mas’an Hamid (1995:83) menambahkan ilmu ‘Aru? berguna untuk mempermudah seseorang dalam membaca teks-teks sastra kuno atau puisi-puisi arab lama.
Ilmu Aru? pertama kali diperkenalkan oleh Al-Khalil ibn Ahmad ibn ‘Amr bin Tamim. Dilatarbelakangi oleh pengamatannya kepada para penyair pada masa itu yang menciptakan puisi
tanpa aturan-aturan (ÃæÒÇä), Hal ini disebabkan oleh terkikisnya bakat mereka dalam hal itu serta adanya asimilasi dengan bakat orang luar (ÃÚÌãí), maka ia mulai menghimpun puisi-puisi
mereka lalu mengklasifikasinya berdasarkan jenis-jenis pola puisi. Pola-pola itu kemudian diberinya nama buhur (ÈÍæÑ ). Lalu ia lanjutkan dengan mencari bagian-bagian puisi yang mengalami perubahan.
Kesemuanya ini ia namakan ilmu ‘Arudh. Ia namakan Ilmu ‘Arudh karena ia bermukim di tempat yang bernama ‘Aru? yaitu Mekah al-Mukarromah. (Chotibul Umam, 1992:6).
‘Audy al-Wakil (1964:47) berpendapat ilmu ini diberi nama ‘Aru? diidentikkan antara istilah ÚÑæÖ ÇáÈíÊ (tengah-tengah bait puisi) dengan keberadaan dan tempat penemuannya di tengah-tengah Saudi Arabia.
