তাওবা হলো অতীতের গুনাহের অনুশোচনা, দুনিয়ার কোন উপকারিতা অর্জন অথবা ক্ষতি থেকে বাঁচার জন্য নয় একমাত্র আল্লাহ তা‘আলার জন্যই সার্বক্ষণিকভাবে সে গুনাহ ছেড়ে দেওয়ার উপর দৃঢ় প্রতিজ্ঞা করা। জবরদস্তির মাধ্যমে নয় বরং শরী‘আতের বিধি-নিষেধ তার উপর বহাল থাকবে ততক্ষণ স্বেচ্ছায় এ প্রতিজ্ঞা করবে। ইবাদতসমূহের মধ্যে তাওবা অতি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ইবাদত। তাওবার আবশ্যকীয়তা, ব্যাপকতা ও তাতে নিয়মানুবর্তিতার পরিমণ্ডল থেকে পাপী-তাপী যেমন বহির্ভূত নয়, তেমনি আল্লাহর ওলীগণ ও নবীগণও তার পরিসীমা থেকে বাইরে নন। এটি সর্বাবস্থায় সর্বত্র সকলের জন্য প্রযোজ্য। তাওবা মানুষের জীবনের একটি অন্যতম বৈশিষ্ট্য।

আল্লাহ তা‘আলা ক্ষমাশীল ও দয়ালু। বান্দার প্রতি রহমদিল। সুতরাং তাঁর দরবারে আমাদের বিনম্রচিত্তে ইস্তেগফারের উদ্দেশ্যে নত হওয়া দরকার। এখানে একটা কথা বলে রাখা দরকার, গোনাহ যত দীর্ঘ হবে ততই শেকড় মজবুত হবে। যেমন: কেউ একটি গাছ উপড়াতে গিয়েও উপড়াল না বরং ফেলে রাখল, ভাবল পরের বছর উপড়ালেও চলবে কিন্তু পরের বছর এর শেকড় আরো মজবুত হল আর লোকটার শক্তিও কমে গেল, সুতরাং সে কি করে গাছ উপড়াবে? গোনাহকে ফেলে রাখলে পরিণতি এই-ই হয়। তাই আমাদের আজই এবং এখনই তওবা করা দরকার।
