পশ্চিমবাংলায় যখন হলুদ মিডিয়ার ছড়াছড়ি, বাংলার জনগন যখন নির্ভর যোগ্য খবরের সন্ধানে দিশেহারা তখন কিছু শান্তিপ্রিয় মানুষের প্রচেষ্টায় দৈনিক ভাবে প্রকাশিত হয় কলম পত্রিকার সেটা বেশিদিন আগের কথা নয়। সে সময় তারা উপলব্দি করতে পেরেছিল যে বাংলায় এমন একটি পত্রিকা প্রয়োজন যেটা নির্ভিকভাবে, নিরিপেক্ষ ভাবে সত্য খবর কে বাংলার জনগনের সামনে তুলে ধরবে। তাদের এই বিচক্ষণতা, বিবেচনা কে সাধুবাদ না জানিয়ে পারা যায়না। খুব অল্প সময়ের মধ্যেই এই পত্রিকা অনেকটায় জনপ্রিয়তা লাভ করেছে।
