About this app

Walk Auckland lets you take history and cultural tours around your neighbourhood using your smartphone. Custom-designed augmented reality tours take you to the streets of Auckland’s many suburbs to explore the area’s Māori and Pākehā (non-Māori) history, its culture, and its geology and ecosystem. Tours are created by research and local history librarians from Auckland Council Libraries who are experts on the histories of Auckland’s communities and what survives from the past.

Tours can be taken in person or virtually, so even if you aren’t physically in an area, you can still learn about its history and culture. If you prefer to stray from the path and not be confined to the tour route, you can take tours in ‘free roam’ mode. You can even see overviews of tours to help plan your visit.

Walk Auckland is a unique way of exploring the world around you. Through this immersive experience, you will gain an insight into the amazing history, culture and whenua (land) of Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland.
