About this app

DIZQUIZ is aimed at anyone who would like to speak neutral Italian:

Diction students, actors, speakers, journalists, presenters, youtubers, and more generally anyone who wants to pursue a career that involves the use of their voice in public.
Foreign students of Italian at an advanced level who want to learn more about the differences between written and oral Italian.
Anyone who feels the need to de-regionalize their pronunciation of Italian.
DIZQUIZ is not intended (and cannot) be a substitute for an elocution course, but it is an additional tool that allows you to improve your knowledge of Italian by quizzing you on a series of words that you may have learned to pronounce in a nonstandard way.

The goal of this application is to test oneself by assimilating the correct pronunciation of Italian words, instead of trying to memorize hundreds of rules and exceptions.

With CHALLENGE mode you will unlock new words; by choosing REVISE you will only be asked for the unlocked words: you decide when you really know a word, and by excluding it from the list you can focus on the others.

By choosing a word from the PROGRESS list you can exclude it or include it in the list of words to review: you can always change your mind!

This app contains more than 5200 commonly used words, chosen from those in which the tonic accent falls on a "critical" vowel (e, o), in which the letters s and z are present, and homographs: words that are spelled the same way but mean different things depending on how they are pronounced.

A quick search tool can help you find how to pronounce correctly any word in Italian.

The pronunciation of each word has been recorded by a human being, so that it is easier to learn standard Italian by habituation.

Normally each word has only one tonic accent, in the case of compound words however, it may happen that two are declared. Where no accents are declared, the vowel is assumed to have a closed sound.

The phonetic transcriptions in this application mix graphemes found in the Italian Alphabet with some IPA graphemes: the legend of graphemes with their sounds can be accessed from the main menu, and at any time by pressing in the upper right corner of the application.

Since language is an ever-changing dynamic system the phonetic transcriptions given are to be considered valid until proven otherwise.
