First of all, we should realize that we live in a world where even animals select the plants they consume. Hence an intelligent human being must carefully sclect the books hc/she reads. During the process of selection, it is important to take the advice of our elders and to remember our culture and moral values so that initially we choose books that will develop our feelings of righteousness, morality and virtue. Other than this important point, we may read any book that draws our interest.
Our beloved Prophet has established a golden principle with the following statement: "I seek refuge in Allah from knowledge that has no bencfit”. Throughout history many civilizations have met their demise because of the simple fact that the minds' of their youth had been filled with superfluous knowledge. It is quite important to read books that satisfy both our intellect and our heart. We must never forget that human beings possess a soul, in addition to their physical bodics.
Unfortunately, the majority of our population is not in the habit of reading books. Take a good look around you, how many families that you know of have a reading habit and encourage their children to read books. Incidentally, this means we are avoiding something as essential as food and water. Parents usually make a common mistake by assuming that the text books studied in schools are cnough for their children; hence they believe they have fulfilled their obligation by sending their kids to school. Perhaps, school text books provide the basic information for us to recognize our environment. How about issues regarding our own existence? Have we ever thought about our origin or our final destination? Since cach day that passes by brings us closer to death, Jocs this mean that we all resemble a person waiting on death row?
