About this app

Clans are one of the most important things in Diné culture. Clans establish who you are as a Diné person and is the foundation of kinship between Diné people. Knowing your clans and how to express kinship to one other is an essential part of the Diné identity. Many times when speaking to people, you are expected to say your clans first so that they know who you are and how you are related. Learning who you are related to can help you connect with each other and is a way to incorporate Diné values back into the lives of contemporary Diné people. It is useful and important for Diné people to know how they are related to one another and to know what to call each other.
Diné Bizaad is not practiced as much these days, therefore younger Diné people (like me) typically have trouble understanding how they are related when hearing the clans of another person. While they know their clans, they do not know how their clans relate to other people's clans. I created this app to address that issue. This app tells you how you are related and tells you how to express kinship to another Diné person. This app was created as a technological tool to help revitalize and practice clan kinship for the Diné people. In this way, I am indigenizing technology and hope that this aspect of our culture is strengthened, valued and practiced more among the younger generations of Diné.
Here is how it works:
-Input your clans
-Input another person’s clans
-Scroll through how you are related and see what to call each other based on both of your clans.
Cool huh?:)
It’s also a nice way of checking if you are related to your significant other, so you can tell Másání when she asks. You know she’s going to…
