Bachata is a popular guitar music that comes from the Dominican Republic. Although bachata is based on the rhythm of the bolero, the bachateros traditionally included in their repertoires other types of music such as son, merengue, waltz and ranchera. The influence of all these styles, and particularly the merengue, can be felt in the rhythms, harmonies and melodies of bachata itself.
Guitar music has always been part of the Dominican musical landscape, but the first bachata recognized as such was recorded in 1961 by José Manuel Calderón. Calderon's bachata and his contemporaries were virtually identical to the bolero of other Latin American countries like Puerto Rico and Ecuador. In fact, many of the songs recorded by these bachateros were versions of previous boleros, and music was considered by society in general in the same way as bolero throughout Latin America - a romantic music, popular with lovers and singers of serenades .
Bachata is a musical rhythm of percussion and strings originating in the Dominican Republic, which has its roots in Cuban son and African rhythms. Among the primary instruments are guitars, marimbas, maracas, güira, bongos and timbales. The musical style is a hybrid, derived from a mixture of bolero and other Latin and Caribbean rhythms. It has its beginnings at the beginning of century XX.

At first, bachata was considered by many in the Dominican Republic as a low-class or poor rhythm, because it was originally heard and danced in slums, brothels or in the countryside. Therefore, many despised her as vulgar, rustic and without style. During the military dictatorship of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo (1930-1961), bachata was repressed and relegated to the lower strata of society. The dictator himself, who controlled every aspect of people's lives, had taken care that merengue replaced bachata as the music of the country. With the death of Trujillo, its popularity increased and began to be heard openly in different public environments.
It was towards the end of the 80's when it was recognized its high musical and rhythmic quality and managed to internationalize. Today, bachata is the Dominican style par excellence, a national symbol, popular not only on the island but also around the world.
