About this app

Genk kent een rijke geschiedenis als het gaat om de ontwikkelingen van het landschap. Het Kempense boerendorp was vanaf het midden van de negentiende eeuw een van de meest geliefde schildersoorten van België. Over de heidevlaktes, de moerassen en de vijvers keek je tot aan de horizon, maar onder het zichtbare landschap verschool zich een element dat de omgeving drastisch deed veranderen. Na de ontdekking van steenkool werd het landschap ondersteboven en binnenstebuiten gekeerd om een fossiele natuur in het binnenste van de aarde naar boven te halen.

De terril is ontstaan doordat er bij de steenkolenwinning veel stenen mee omhoog kwamen. De stenen werden van de steenkool gescheiden en als afval opgehoopt. In dit artificiele heuvellandschap waan je je ver van de bewoonde wereld, maar overal waar je kijkt zijn sporen van de mens en maatschappij zichtbaar. Songs for a Landscape is een muzikale interpretatie van de ondergrond van dit landschap. Een klanklandschap om in rond te dwalen.

PRAKTISCHE INFO

Songs for a Landscape vindt plaats aan de voet van de terril (mijnheuvel) van Winterslag (Genk). De mijnheuvel is bereikbaar via de voetgangersbrug over de Henri Esserlaan, die je bereikt als je vanaf C-mine Cultuurcentrum links (met gezicht naar de ingang van het gebouw) wandelt en rechtdoor aanhoudt. Ga over de brug en sla linksaf. Blijf parallel aan de brede weg wandelen. Aan het einde van het voetpad kan je via een zandpaadje de terril op gaan. Start de wandeling zodra je het hek voorbij gaat.
