About this app

OVER 1500 SIGNED WORDS
This is KSL - Kenyan Sign Language Dictionary.

Kenyan Sign Language (KSL) is a visual language that uses manual, facial, and other non-manual elements. It is used by the Deaf Community in Kenya. There are some dialectal differences between Western, Eastern, and Coastal Kenya, though these differences have not been fully documented yet.

This app is for those who wish to learn Kenyan Sign Language for communication with Deaf people in Kenya. The app includes videos of common words. Signs were originally drawn from the Kenyan Sign Language Dictionary published by the Kenyan National Association of the Deaf (1991). This was supplemented by videos from the KSL Lexicon Inventory Project (KLIP 2020), and additions from KSL signers Evans Namasaka Burichani and Jared Otieno Osome in consultation with the Deaf community in Kenya.

This Kenyan Sign Langauge app contains over 1500 signs from Kenyan Sign Language and their English equivalents. The KSL app is an initiative of the HANDS! Lab for Sign Languages and Deaf Studies at Leiden University, as part of the Language Socialization in Deaf Families project funded by the Leiden University Fund. Videos also come from the KSL Lexicon Inventory Project (KLIP 2020/21) funded by a grant to Hope E. Morgan from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No 707404.

In the future, more words and phrases that are missing from the databases can be suggested to add.

The software for the app was developed by Leslie Okyere, a deaf IT specialist and teacher.
The app is completely free!
