Installation Instructions

This article outlines two straightforward methods for installing Ethiopian Sign Language on PC Windows and Mac.

Using BlueStacks

  1. Download the APK/XAPK file from this page.
  2. Install BlueStacks by visiting http://bluestacks.com.
  3. Open the APK/XAPK file by double-clicking it. This action will launch BlueStacks and begin the application's installation. If the APK file does not automatically open with BlueStacks, right-click on it and select 'Open with...', then navigate to BlueStacks. Alternatively, you can drag-and-drop the APK file onto the BlueStacks home screen.
  4. Wait a few seconds for the installation to complete. Once done, the installed app will appear on the BlueStacks home screen. Click its icon to start using the application.

About this app

My name is Woinshet Girma Ayansa. I am Deaf, and I am an Ethiopian citizen. I studied both bachelor and master degree in Linguistics /Ethiopian Sign Language/ in Addis Ababa University. In addition, I have been conducting my PhD dissertation entitled “Description of Lexical Semantic Relations in Ethiopia Sign Language: Implications for Sign Language Dictionary Making” in Addis Ababa University since 2016. This application is prepared by linguistics department, African Sign Language unit of Netherlands Leiden University. The application which is primarily prepared for beginners consists of 460 Ethiopian Sign Language, and it is sponsored by Aspasia Grant, Leiden University Netherlands. Being Deaf, I use these sign languages in my day to day interactions with other Deaf people and the language users in general. Furthermore, while conducting my research, I have witnessed Deaf people in my surrounding and elsewhere in the study settings using the aforementioned sign languages in their daily communications in Ethiopia.

The EthSL app is an initiative of the HANDS! Lab for Sign Languages and Deaf Studies at Leiden University, as part of the Language Socialization in Deaf Families project funded by the Leiden University Fund.
The EthSL app was developed by Leslie Okyere, a deaf software developer.
