Ha! Downloaded to see if I could find the name Liu as in "Liu Barber and Hair Salon" from Shenmue 1 on the Sega Dreamcast and I can not find it in this or in another dictionary. Granted this only has a large sampling of names since it is the free trial edition AND in the game the shop in question is owned by Chinese people so maybe it would not show up in a Japanese dictionary or a name app anyway... But the kanji is the exact same for "clear" or "a clear sound", EXCEPT there is no kanji hanging around on the far left- no three dash marks and no "mouth" although it is an odd looking square/"mouth" kanji. I will give it three stars because it sounds like a good idea and the full version may of even had what I needed, but this free version does not. Good luck to you. I hope more people try it if it suits their needs. ^_^ Edit: However in the same game there is a corner store called "Abe Store". Now the kanji by themself could be pieced together as "corner" or "nook" + "department" or "division" + "selling" or "merchant" + "store". So I figured it meant a "corner shop". And it may very well mean that in a sense, but checking your app and I clearly see that it shows the first half of the group of kanji as "Abe" for an actual name and not a meaning. So I shall change my score to four stars now. ^_^ Now if you can explain how we are suppose to know to look up names first, instead of meanings or vice versa and I would give you 4 and 1/2 stars if that is even possible. ^_^

About this app

Baffled by that name on a Japanese business card? Can't figure out the names in a Japanese newspaper or book? Japanese names can be very hard to figure out, even for experienced linguists. Names often use uncommon Kanji or the Kanji are pronounced in ways you can't find in a standard dictionary. And there can be dozens of different ways to write common names, like the girl's name “Asuka” for example.

The full version of this dictionary, with over 740,000 names, is an essential tool for Japanese linguists. This trial version contains 10,000 randomly-selected names of both Japanese and foreign people, places, literary works, train stations, companies, products and organizations so that you can try it out. The dictionary can be searched with Kanji, Kana or English and automatically detects which is being used. Results are displayed instantly as you type and are always shown in Kanji (if there is a Kanji spelling), Kana and Romanized English.

But what about those uncommon Kanji used in names? The dictionary includes our unique built-in visual Kanji Keyboard. The keyboard works seamlessly with your favorite Japanese keyboard and is completely visual – no stroke counting, no need to guess how the Kanji is pronounced. Just pick out which visual elements are in the Kanji. As you touch each element, the keyboard adapts to show you only the minimum set of elements that are needed next. Most unknown Kanji can be found by touching only 1 – 3 elements. By far the fastest and easiest way to find unknown Kanji.
