महावतार बाबाजी का असली नाम और जन्म तिथि ज्ञात नहीं है इसलिए उस अवधि के दौरान उनसे मिलनेवाले उन्हें सर्वप्रथम लाहिरी महाशय द्वारा दी गई पदवी के नाम से पुकारते थे।"महावतार" का अर्थ है "महान अवतार" और "बाबाजी" का सरल सा मतलब है "श्रद्धेय पिता". कुछ मुलाकातें जिनके दो या अधिक साक्षी भी थे-महावतार बाबाजी से मुलाकात करने वाले उन सभी व्यक्तियों के बीच चर्चाओं से संकेत मिलता है कि वे सभी एक ही व्यक्ति से मिले थे।

महावतार बाबा कौन हैं? कहां रहते हैं और क्या सचमुच ही वे 5,000 वर्षों से जिंदा हैं? सचमुच महावतार बाबा का रहस्य बरकरार है। उनके बारे में कहा जाता है कि उन्होंने आदिशंकराचार्य को क्रिया योग की शिक्षा दी थी और बाद में उन्होंने संत कबीर को भी दीक्षा दी थी।
