I wanted to actually identify the actual bug that was attacking my plant..i know what it is but need to know for sure and how to get rid of them...but your app said my plant was 100% healthy when i know that bugs are attacking it..don't understand this at all.

The app is a great idea and we plan to make use of it in some of our IPM work. The only real problem is the lack of instructions given within the app itself. Firstly, you need to set your leaf on a black, non-reflective surface (black construction paper is one option) before you take its photo. Secondly, you need to touch the areas of the leaf that will be ignored (healthy green areas, lighter green stem and veins, etc.). Lastly, adjust the threshold level until the diseased/damaged areas turn blue. You may need to select additional healthy areas of the leaf so that they are no longer blue. Another factor to consider is the waxiness/shininess of the leaf itself. Really reflective leaves, such as Holly, are very difficult to nearly impossible to set up. The science article published by the authors in APS gives important tips and is a recommended read.

About this app

Leaf Doctor performs quantitative assessments for plant diseases on plant organs such as leaves. Users collect or submit photographs of diseased plant organs and calculate the percentage of diseased tissue. Through a user’s touching of the device screen, the algorithm employs user-specified values for up to eight colors of healthy tissues in the photograph. The color of each pixel is then evaluated for its distance from the healthy colors and assigned a status of either healthy or diseased. Users may slide a threshold bar until satisfied that diseased tissues are represented accurately before the percentage calculation. The assessment data and photographs may be sent by e-mail to any recipients. Instructions for using the app are provided on the About screen. The Leaf Doctor was produced by Cornell University and the University of Hawaii at Manoa, College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources.

New features

This release of Leaf Doctor allows users of Android devices to calculate the percentage of an image that is occupied by user-specified pixels. One such use would be a calculation of percent disease on a plant organ (leaf, fruit) or population (aerial photograph of a field). Other potential uses include ecology, geography and biology.
