प्रत्येक वर्ष कार्तिक कृष्ण त्रयोदशी तिथि के दिन धन तेरस का त्योहार मनाया जाता है। इस दिन से ही पंच दिवसीय त्योहार शुरू होता है जो भाई दूज के साथ समाप्त होता है।

कार्तिक कृष्ण पक्ष की त्रयोदशी तिथि के दिन भगवान धन्वन्तरि का जन्म हुआ था इसलिए इस तिथि को धनतेरस या धनत्रयोदशी के नाम से जाना जाता है। भारत सरकार ने धनतेरस को राष्ट्रीय आयुर्वेद दिवस के रूप में मनाने का निर्णय लिया है।

धनतेरस की पहली कथा
शास्त्रों के अनुसार धनतेरस के दिन ही भगवान धनवंतरी हाथों में स्वर्ण कलश लेकर सागर मंथन से उत्पन्न हुए। धनवंतरी ने कलश में भरे हुए अमृत से देवताओं को अमर बना दिया। धनवंतरी के उत्पन्न होने के दो दिनों बाद देवी लक्ष्मी प्रकट हुई। इसलिए दीपावली से दो दिन पहले धनतेरस का त्योहार मनाया जाता है।

शास्त्रों के अनुसार भगवान धनवंतरी देवताओं के वैद्य हैं। इनकी भक्ति और पूजा से आरोग्य सुख यानी स्वास्थ्य लाभ मिलता है। मान्यता है कि भगवान धनवंतरी विष्णु के अंशावतार हैं। संसार में चिकित्सा विज्ञान के विस्तार और प्रसार के लिए ही भगवान विष्णु ने धनवंतरी का अवतार लिया था।

देवताओं का धन हुआ तेरह
धनतेरस से जुड़ी एक दूसरी कथा है कि कार्तिक कृष्ण त्रयोदशी के दिन देवताओं के कार्य में बाधा डालने के कारण भगवान विष्णु ने असुरों के गुरू शुक्राचार्य की एक आंख फोड़ दी थी। कथा के अनुसार, देवताओं को राजा बलि के भय से मुक्ति दिलाने के लिए भगवान विष्णु ने वामन अवतार लिया और राजा बलि के यज्ञ स्थल पर पहुंच गये।

शुक्राचार्य ने वामन रूप में भी भगवान विष्णु को पहचान लिया और राजा बलि से आग्रह किया कि वामन कुछ भी मांगे उन्हें इंकार कर देना। वामन साक्षात भगवान विष्णु हैं। वो देवताओं की सहायता के लिए तुमसे सब कुछ छीनने आये हैं।
