Kitab ini adalah kitab Al-Hikam yang merupakan kitab karya besar dari Ibn ‘Atha’illah, berisikan kumpulan kata atau kalimat-kalimat hikmah yang tinggi nilai manfaatnya.
Selain itu kitab ini penuh berisikan pemahaman tentang tauhid, ma'rifatullah dan adab atau akhlak (budi pekerti).
Sosok Syekh Ibn ‘Atha’illah as-Sakandari lahir sekira tahun 1309 Masehi di kota Alexandria (Iskandariyah), lalu pindah ke Kairo Mesir, beliau hidup di masa kekuasaan Dinasti Mameluk.
Di kota inilah beliau menghabiskan hidupnya sebagai pengajar fikih mazhab Imam Maliki di berbagai lembaga intelektual, di antara nya di Mesjid Al-Azhar.
Di waktu yang sama beliau juga mempunyai keilmuan yang luas dibidang tasawuf sebagai seorang syeikh besar ketiga di lingkungan tarekat sufi Syadziliyah ini.
Ibn ‘Athaillah tergolong syeikh/ulama yang produktif, tak kurang dari 20 karya besar yang pernah dihasilkannya mencakup bidang tasawuf, aqidah, hadits, tafsir, nahwu, dan ushul fiqh dan dari
beberapa karyanya itu yang paling terkenal yaitu kitab al-Hikam.
