Shalawat merupakan bentuk kata jamak yang berasal dari bahasa Arab:, bentuk kata tunggalnya adalah kata shalat yang berarti berdoa atau mendoakan. Membaca shalawat dalam kerangka agama adalah mendoakan Rasulullah SAW mendapatkan tambahan rahmat, kemuliaan, kehormatan dari Allah SWT. Dan perintah untuk melaksanakan shalawat dijelaskan Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala dalam surah Al-Ahzab ayat 56 :

Artinya : Sesungguhnya Allah dan malaikat-malaikat-Nya bershalawat untuk Nabi. Hai orang-orang yang beriman, bershalawatlah kamu untuk Nabi dan ucapkanlah salam penghormatan kepadanya.

Ada juga yang mengatakan ia berarti taufik dari Allah Ta’ala untuk mengeluarkan hamba-Nya dari kegelapan (kesesatan) menuju cahaya (petunjuk-Nya), sebagaimana dalam firman-Nya:

“Dialah yang bershalawat kepadamu (wahai manusia) dan malaikat-Nya (dengan memohonkan ampunan untukmu), supaya Dia mengeluarkan kamu dari kegelapan kepada cahaya (yang terang). Dan adalah Dia Maha Penyayang kepada orang-orang yang beriman.” (Al-Ahzab:43).

Dalam masyarakat muslim khususnya di Indonesia, tradisi shalawat bertujuan untuk menggugah semangat perjuangan dengan cara mengenang kembali perjuangan Rasulullah SAW. Adapun macamnya antara lain :
